Can I add hair to my garden soil?

Hair in the Garden

Human or animal hair is an excellent fertilizer and can be used in the garden. It is high in nitrogen and is quite beneficial to plants. However, hair is very slow to break down and may literally sit in your garden for years. Some people use human hair in the vegetable garden to help repel wild animals.

Well, according to the gardening experts on BBC's Gardener's Question Time, the only human hair that would repel wild animals would be hair which smells stongly of human...i.e. hair that is not very clean! Apparently, freshly washed and scented hair is no deterrent at all.
