Planting LettucePlanting lettuce seeds directly in the garden in thick, wide rows is not recommended. This causes overcrowding and a poor crop. Lettuce should be started in a flat. The seedlings should be placed in the garden when they have produced their fifth to sixth leaf. Place seedlings evenly about every 10 inches.
