Caring for Flowering Dogwoods

Flowering dogwoods are fairly easy to care for and can live for 50 years or more in most gardens. To care for your flowering dogwoods, you should: 1. Be sure your soil is acidic. If it is alkaline, you will have to add sulfur to the soil. 2. Remove grass from the area surrounding your tree, preferably to the edges of the tree's canopy, since grass competes for important nutrients. 3. Apply two to three inches of mulch around the tree, but be sure you do not place mulch directly against the trunk. 4. Give your tree a dose of bone meal or plant food designed for acid loving trees and shrubs each fall.
