November 13, 2009, Newsletter Issue #419: Effects of Wind on the Garden

Tip of the Week

If you live in an area that is windy you may already know how wind, especially high wind, can affect the garden. If you are in an area that is generally calm and are suddenly experiencing high winds you may not realize the effect it will have on your garden.

High winds can break plants, even those that are staked. Keep an eye out for wind damaged plants in your garden. Trim them up or cut them back as needed to maintain your plant.

If you normally water with a sprinkler you should reconsider and water by hand. The wind will simply blow the water that comes out of a sprinkler and the plants you want to receive the water may not. It is also possible that areas of the garden may not receive a drop of water while the area right next to them does.

Wind will dry the soil out much faster so keep an eye on container plants. They may need watered more frequently. The same holds true for plants that you just put in the ground. The wind will dry the ground out faster than what you may realize.

In summery:

During times of high wind it is important that you go out every day or if possible, several times a day, and check on your plants. Be prepared to give them an extra drink of water if necessary. Be sure to remove any damaged stems, flowers or foliage to keep your plant healthy.
