How can I prevent tuber or rhizome rot when dividing perennials?

Preventing Bulb Rot

When you divide rhizomes or tubers, the cut ends can become infected with bacteria and will begin to rot. Always sterilize your knife before you begin using it to make the divisions. As soon as you make a cut, dust the tuber or rhizome with sulfur to prevent rotting.
