January 1, 2010, Newsletter Issue #426: Advantages Of Hand Powered Tools

Tip of the Week

While this may seem a bit crazy, tools that are powered by your hands, including lawn mowers, not only save money but help save the environment.

While this does mean more work for you, it is good exercise. If you think about how much you pay for oil and gasoline every year to operate lawn mowers, weed eaters, roto-tillers, blowers, mulchers, etc. you will realize that you can save substantially by doing it by hand.

Long before there were weed eaters, people pulled weeds by hand or used scissors to cut them down. If you live in an area where livestock is allowed, chickens are great weed eaters. Be warned however that they will eat fruits and vegetables as well as young seedlings. They seem to leave larger ornamental plants alone but do love bugs especially Japanese beetles.

Pushing a hand powered lawn mower can be physically exhausting depending on the amount of land you have and the layout of the land. The newer push lawn mowers are much easier to push than older ones and of course, the sharper the blades, the easier the lawn mower will cut.

Digging your garden by hand instead of using a roto-tiller can make the growing area nicer since a shovel will go deeper than a roto-tiller. It will take longer to prepare your garden by hand. An alternative would be to create raised beds.

Instead of using a blower to gather leaves, why not rake them up the old fashion way? The leaves can then be put on the garden or composted.

Sometimes, technology, while nice, really can be the more expensive way to get things done.
