October 3, 2003, Newsletter Issue #189: Winter Pond Care

Tip of the Week

Check all your tubing, pumps and filters in your pond, for rust or loose fittings. Wrap any exposed piping in insulation. Any tender aquatic plants should be lifted and placed in a sheltered area for the winter.

You can place a thick mesh sheet of netting over the pond, cover it with burlap, then place straw on top of it all, for effective insulation against freezing.

In the spring, uncover, and leave the netting in place to stop large wading birds from eating your fish.
