July 26, 2002, Newsletter Issue #133: Summer Pest Problems

Tip of the Week

To control corn earworm, take 20 drops of mineral oil and place on the cornsilk 3 days after they first appear. After harvest is over, till under the stalks immediately to destroy any leftover pests.
If your tomatoes are ripening nicely, but you are seeing white cloudy spots on the skins and tissue below the skin, you have stinkbugs! Stinkbugs feed on ripening fruit, by sucking the juices causing the cloudy spots to appear. The tomatoes are fine to eat. Just cut away the damaged areas. Home garden sprays donīt control this pest. If you have wild raspberry canes, removal in the Fall, will stop this pest from returning.
