Tip of the Week

When prolonged heat spells hit your area, there are some things you need to do to minimise the stress. First, stop all high nitrogen feeds. Use only organic fertilizers, like fish emulsion, kelp, or bone meal. Second, weed, then mulch around the vegetables, using cocoa hulls. Why? Because cocoa hulls are light, and won´t smother the root system, or take nitrogen from the plants. Use shade cloth for very young plants. And finally, use a drip hose, laid out along rows, at a slow steady drip. These things will help minimise losses.
