November 16, 2001, Newsletter Issue #97: Protecting Roses From Frost

Tip of the Week

1: I spray my roses with dormant oil in the late Fall and again in the Spring. This inhibits the overwintering of insects and affords some protection from disease. When you spray, make sure to thoroughly saturate the canes and donīt water on the same day you use this product.
2: Make cages of chicken wire around your rose bushes. Fill the inside of them with clean dry material, straw, mulch or even styrofoam pebbles. Cover the cage with burlap, and anchor it tightly. You can then cover over the entire thing with mulch or dried leaves.
