Planting Spring Bulbs In The SpringIn times past if you forgot to plant or at least purchase spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils, tulips or hyacinth in the fall you simply had to wait until the following year. Bulb companies have got smart over the years, not only because of people wanting to force bulbs but because of people who want to plant spring flowering bulbs in the spring, and have began offering alternatives. Many companies now sell pre-chilled bulbs which are perfect for forcing but also can be direct planted if you keep them in a cool place. A refrigerator will work, but watch for mold. If the bulbs get too much moisture on them, mold can develop and rot the bulbs. A better alternative would be to plant the bulbs in pots, sink the pots into the ground or place them in a semi-protected, cold area and watch for signs of emergence. Once you see small shoots you can bring them indoors where they will flower or plant them in the garden. Be careful not to disturb the roots. Some gardeners plant the pot, then come summer, remove the pot and put the bulbs alone in the hole. Another option is to watch your local nursery and big box stores for spring bulbs that are pre-planted in peat pots. These can be put into the ground directly, pots and all. The pots will slowly decompose so there will be no need to remove the pot.
