Bulbs To Start In January For Cut Flower Production

Heated greenhouses, or in some parts of the country, coldframes, can be utilized in January to start bulbs for cut flower production. Getting a head start on the season can be a real advantage to market gardeners. Cut flowers grown in a greenhouse environment have several advantages. The first one is they often bloom sooner. The flowers are not suspectible to weather and bug problems thus allowing them to be blemish free. The third advantage is that some flowers may never reach their full height potential in the field but will in a greenhouse.

Bulbs to start this month include iris, anemone, triteleria and crocosmia. Iris and anemone will bloom as early as April. Triteleria will bloom in May and crocosmia in July. Remember most plants needs a certain number of days to bloom, so the earlier in the month you plant, the eariler they will bloom.
