Depend On Rain

A great way to sow seeds that are sown directly on top of the ground is to do it either right before or during a light rain. Watch the weather to see what is ahead. Make sure the rain will be light as too heavy of a rain would wash the seeds away. If you are lucky enough to get several days of rain in a row you may not have to water at all.

Using nature to water in seeds is smart. It saves water and time. Allowing rain to water in newly planted perennials or annuals works well too. Just make sure there is adequate rainfall. If not, you will still need to offer supplemental water. Remember that most plants prefer an inch of water per week.

Another great tip is to make a circle in the dirt around your plants roots. Make it about half of an inch to an inch deep. This indentation will collect water that will filter down into your plants roots instead of simply running across the ground.
