Ten Weeks To Go Until The Last Frost
In many areas of the country there are just ten weeks left before the last frost of the year. To home gardeners this means it is time to start many seeds indoors. To know which seeds to start now look at the back of the seed packet to see what it says. Remember some seeds can take several weeks to germinate while others will literally germinate overnight.
If you are starting seeds indoors, be sure to have grow lights set up. Seedlings that do not receive proper light end up being leggy. It is also necessary to lightly fertlize the seedlings once they begin sprouting.
If space is a problem, try starting seeds in damp paper towels. Remember however that once the seeds germinate you will need room to plant them. Cool weather varieties such as lettuce, spinach, viola, pansy and other early spring growing plants can be put into cold frames outside to save indoor space. Tomatoes, eggplants and peppers are heat lovers and should be grown indoors until the soil warms and the temperatures are in the 50's F.
