January 15, 2010, Newsletter Issue #428: Conserve Water With Rain Barrels, Soaker Hoses

Tip of the Week

The best way to conserve water is to use rain barrels. All you have to do is situate them underneath rain gutters. Once they're full, you'll have to figure out how to get the water out of them.

Some rain barrels have spouts near the bottom that make accessing the water easy, some have hose hookups, and others require that water be removed from the top of the barrel. If your barrel doesn't have a spout, you can purchase one and install it yourself. No matter what kind of barrel you have, cover the top with a screen to keep debris, animals, and mosquitos out.

If you find that rainwater isn't sufficient, try soaker hoses. They're designed to lay on the ground and deliver water close to the plants' roots. If possible, run them in the morning to cut down on evaporation—this will conserve water and help your plants deal with intense heat during the day.
