November 20, 2009, Newsletter Issue #420: Proper Winter Watering For Houseplants

Tip of the Week

It is easy to give a houseplant too much water, or not enough water, in the winter. During the summer months, container grown plants often require watering every day. During the winter months, many houseplants go into a dormant like stage. During this stage they do not require heavy watering or frequent fertilizing.

Another thing to take into consideration is your home is likely cooler than what the outside temperature is in the summer. This cooler temperature lets the plant know it is time to rest. This is why you do not gernerally need to fertilize plants in the winter.

Watering once a week, for most plants, is plenty in the winter. For some plants, such as cacti, weekly watering may be too much. If your plants are in a room that is not heated, watering once a month may be enough.

So how do you decide how often to water? First take into consideration the temperature inside your home. If it is on the cool side, say 70 degrees F, you should be able to water just once a week or less. If the temperature is higher, you may need to water more frequently.

Keep an eye on the soil. Does it feel moist? If so, watering is not necessary. If it feels dry however, unless it is a plant such as a cacti that needs drier soil, give your plant a drink. There are numerous gadgets available that help people know when their plants need water. If, after feeling the soil, you still are unsure, look for one of these items such as the Thirsty Light.

Another important step in winter plant care is humidity. Most houses are a bit on the dry side. There are three easy ways to remedity this. One is to use a humidifier, one is to set plants clustered in saucers filled with water and pebbles, the third is to mist your plants. If you use a humidifier, group your plants close to it.

Follow these tips and your houseplants should reward you with years of enjoyment.
