September 6, 2002, Newsletter Issue #139: Autumn Division: Bulbs and Rhizomes

Tip of the Week

When preparing to divide plants like iris, hosta or daylily, make certain you have a new bed ready for the new starts. Simply take a very sharp shovel and drive it down the center of the clump. Dig up one half, leaving as much soil intact as possible and plant in its new bed. Smooth the soil around the remaining half and give both a dose of transplant or rooting hormone. Mulch heavily for winter protection.
