Clematis are showy and vigorous vining flowers to have clambering up a trellis or arbor. In order for them to bloom abundantly, the soil needs to be alkaline. If your soil pH is too high, add a shovelful of lime to the soil each spring. Keep the roots shaded by applying mulch.
