February 1, 2002, Newsletter Issue #108: Pre -Season Warmup

Tip of the Week

Early February is a good time to plant bulbs, rhizomes and corms for summer color. You can plant lilies, gladioli, agapanthus, canna and callas now.

The USDA has issued several new regulations concerning the use of manure as a top dressing. It has been found that uncomposted or incompletely composted manure was the source of several plant based e-coli, and listeria outbreaks. It seems that the bacteria was in the uncomposted manure used to top-dress the crops. The bacteria was picked up by the plants and consumed. If you use this method of fertilization, a MINIMUM of four months is suggested for proper composting. For more information check out their website at www.usda.gov
