June 29, 2001, Newsletter Issue #77: Roses

Tip of the Week

Roses, like many flowering plants can`t handle prolonged heat well, without extra care. Watering correctly is critical. I water in the morning deeply. I also spray the entire bush wetting it thoroughly. This helps the rose survive the heat much better. After dark, I deep water again, checking first for soil dryness. Avoid the use of strong fertilisers and chemicals during this time. You will end up with scorched foliage. Add extra mulch to help conserve as much moisture as possible. And keep spent or burnt blooms picked off. The bushes need all the energy they can to handle the heat.
